It took a long time to put together and the tracklist went through many changes before it felt completely right. Nearly all the songs have been re-edited and the mix features some new mash-ups I did only for this mix. The lack of time to work on it was pretty frustrating, but it certainly paid off in the end, when Radio FM4 invited me to play it exclusively at their high-profile show La Boum de Luxe.

The project Big Slovenia explores the visual appearance of Slovenian territory on the maps of Europe and the world. Based on initial findings, the Republic of Slovenia is very decorative.

Exhibitions:

This is a collaborative project I did with Vuk Ćosić, which explores the very different ways Slovenia is depicted on European and World maps.

Execution:

16 high quality photo prints (each 50cm x 50cm)

Thoughts:

Working on this project was an interesting experience for a number of reasons. First of all, our backgrounds are not as similar as they appear. We’ve both worked in the internet industry, but while Vuk works mostly with ideas and concepts, my work has been of much more technical nature. Also, we have very different approaches. While Vuk stresses simplicity and directness, I enjoy doing things in a more complex way, a deformity I developed so I could keep myself interested in the tons of similar commercial projects I had been doing over the years. I guess we met halfway on this project. Another peculiarity is the static and non-interactive nature of the presentation, which one could describe as post-net-art.

We never really talked about the concept because it’s so simple and self-explanatory, we just agreed it’s very amusing.
However, here are some of my own thoughts which relate to it:

The 16 images deal on one hand with the fact that newer (Eastern) European countries are relatively unknown and easily confused by foreigners, and on the other hand with Slovenia’s preocupation with national borders, national identity and the absence of a unifying vision with which to present itself to the World. Thus, it is depicted as an ameboid shape, rendered unrecognizable on maps with a regular scale. In a way, without the historical and geographical context that defines it, it becomes unimportant and is engulfed by the larger stuctures towards which it is running.

The opening in the P74 Gallery was attended by a great number of personal friends and fellow artists. With over 60 guests, it was quite a success if you take into account that the gallery is situated in Šentvid, which is quite far from the center (at least by our standards), that there was a journalist strike at the same time (so the exhibition got hardly any coverage), and that most of the guests found out about the exhibition by word of mouth and following our heavy phone/SMS/email campaign a couple of hours before the opening. As an additional joke, we served freshly made pizza-burek, the indigenous Slovenian fusion dish.

In December 2004, the piece was selected by the curators of the Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana to appear in the mega-exhibition called 7 grehov: Ljubljana – Moskva / 7 Sins: Ljubljana – Moscow, featuring over 100 Eastern European artists. We are featured in the room of Cynicism.

I did this game with the Hikikomori studio for the Slovenian Government as part of an educational portal for children. The main character, Martin Krpan, was taken from a famous Slovenian tale by Fran Levstik about a salt smuggler that is invited to Vienna by the emperor to fight against a generally unpleasant giant Brdavs.
In this modern adaptation, our hero travels through the beaurocratic maze of the Slovenian government, each level representing a different ministry where Krpan has to collect trucker’s permits, while answering trivia about the government and avoiding obstacles. I provided the game logic, engine and worked with Jure from Comland to tie it to the backend, while all levels and characters were designed and animated by Aljoša and Aron from Hikikomori.

I wonder if this game will ever see the light of day, especially since the last elections.

The requirement was, that they must be able to edit the contents of the presentation themselves. Since most people don’t know about XML or HTML, I had to come up with a way for them to change the sturcture and content without typing markup tags manually. So I created an HTML and XML tree editor for them, but they still insisted I show them how to use it. Well, as it turned out, I left the company soon after that, and although I was willing to do it afterwards, it never happened.

Thoughts:

We are not very clear on how our memory works. From our experience, long forgotten memories are accessed using different cues, mostly visual. These cues are rarely straightforward images of objects that we instantly recognize. Usually, they are small abstract snippets that, by themselves wouldn’t make much sense. On the other hand, they can much more clearly convey a feeling or a state of mind. Martin’s Memory deals with these visual cues in a playful manner, arranging the visual cues that trigger his memories randomly, enabling the visitor a glimpse into his inner reflection of the visually saturated urban environment in which he lives.

In American Beauty, Ricky explains his obsessive videotaping of the seemingly most insignificant curiosity with the line “I need to remember”. The need to remember is becoming an obsession to the modern man, where he can barely distingush his own life from the world artificially created by the media. In a struggle to exist in a life where everything is referenced as a line from a movie or part of a pop song, the photographs that we take and the videos that we tape serve to create our own biography, the movie of our life.

Martin’s reconstruction of his Memory goes even further. The visual cues that he presents in the installation brings up the question: Are most of our memories today tied together with commercial brands and logos?1

So the concept was basically, 5 different games that take you an a trip around the world.

I programmed the game’s skeleton, which included a user profile system and scoreboard. I also did the first level of the game, which was basically flying a plane and collecting orange blobs for points.

I knew some of the guys from VenetiCOM from before, but I had no idea they were running an online dating portal. I’m usually very sceptical towards such communities, but when I visited them, I saw why it worked for them. They were constantly animating their visitors, chatting with them, organizing social events and group activities. I was very inspired by their enthusiasm and positive attitude.

When they got a chance to advertise ona-on.com on TV, they asked me if I would make a 30 second TV ad for them. I aggreed to help them, but since they didn’t have any material, except photographs from the events and we didn’t have time for elaborate animations, I decided, we would do screen-captures of Luka using the portal and use that and the photos as material.

The other problem was the music. The only music they could provide in such a short time was by a band from Trbovlje that played some kind of quasi-deep cheezy 80s rock. At first I thought, “oh, it’s gonna be that kind of a commercial”, but then I rethought it and decidet to do the music myself. So I took a few riffs and a vocal from their song, sliced everything up, introduced some beats and remixed everything into something very disco-ish.

At first, they were a bit shocked, but I think they liked it eventually.
