This is a bit embarrassing.

You know, I really wanted this blog thing to work, but it just somehow didn’t work out. I don’t have the time to type out long posts about stuff, and posting links and videos is a bit uninteresting. I also don’t intend to spill my guts regarding my personal life, let’s just say I’m really, really happy.

I’m now more excited about Sindikat’s new blog at http://www.sindikat.tv, so I don’t really feel the need to keep this one.

I will, however turn this one into a regular portfolio site. I’ll update my wordpress installation, tweak the template a bit and cancel the daily blog section.

So long, and see you at the next Sindikat!

I don’t know whether this is a joke or for real. Either way it’s funny. Today, I wanted to watch some videos on MySpace and got this error:

It appears that you are accessing Myspace.com from a location that is not authorized to view our licensed videos. Please go to the United States or its territories and try again.

Check it out:

New stuff in the next Flash Player includes native 3D transform controls (rotation of objects on in XYZ) with their interactivity intact, correct right-to-left text aligning an breaking, selecting across multiple text-fields and the ability to write fast custom transform filters using the new Hydra language (it’s Adobe’s new pixel shading technology).

So here is the keynote from the MAX conference:

Good times!

I just passed my driver’s exam. It’s about friggin time. I don’t want to turn 30 riding a bicycle.

Anyway, honk if you see my car.

This photo is of symbolic nature.

I don’t know. Robots just make me hot. And their masters too.

Don’t go see the Transformers, Dave! Oops, I think I placed a product right there.

Seriously, after seeing that 2-hour marathon of commercials and cross-promotion crap with my own eyes, I wonder how Lynch would pull off directing My Little Pony without plugging a gadjillion of Hasbro products.

Don’t worry, though, it was only an april fool’s joke.

After long years of putting up with proprietary video encoding solutions for Flash, Adobe just released a public beta of the next Flash Player update with MPEG-4 and AAC support.

Tinic Uro’s blog states that Flash will be able to load .mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mov and .3gp files that are encoded with a H.264 video codec (no luck with XviD or DivX, though, boys and girls…) using Baseline, Main, High (BluRay, HD-DVD) or High 10 profile and AAC audio codec using MAIN, LC or SBR profile. Yes, HE-AAC is supported! And 3GPP timed text and image tracks too.

So let me get this straight. Flash will be able to stream high definition video and audio encoded using open-source tools like libfaad, x264 and MP4Box? Hell yeah! You can even play files with multi-channel audio (although it will be downsampled to 44.1 kHz stereo until they replace  that horrible audio engine).

Don’t be shy, jump out from your cubicle and do a funny dance!

And finally some reports from the event at Planet Tuš in Celje.

Edinstveni spektakel v Sloveniji na terasi Planeta Tuš, Celje

I’ve been a big fan of the transformers since I was a kid. Little did I know I will actually turn into one at some point in my life. Although I will restrain myself from commenting on the movie itself, here is a video of me and Matevž getting ready to rehearse some robot moves for the opening event at Planet Tuš in Celje.

scars on 45Scars on 45 is without a doubt my best work yet. It took a long time to put together and the tracklist went through many changes before it felt completely right. Nearly all the songs have been re-edited and the mix features some new mash-ups I did only for this mix. The lack of time to work on it was pretty frustrating, but it certainly paid off in the end, when Radio FM4 invited me to play it exclusively at their high-profile show La Boum de Luxe.

What an honor! I’ve been invited to do an exclusive mix for La Boum Deluxe at Radio FM4.

And since I’m as fast as lightning, it’s going on the air already this Friday, probably sometime after 23h!

It’s called philtre: scars on 45 and will air probably sometime after 23h, but I’m not sure when, exactly.

So, tuna in and flop to the beats of Simian Mobile Disco, Uffie, Justice, Rex the Dog, Oliver Huntemann and some pretty nasty 90s classics all mushed together into 80 minutes of eclectic puree.

I’ll post the cover later today and the complete tracklist on Saturday.

Listen to the stream here.

OMFG! This torture never ends. I’ve moved servers again! At least this one is run by fellow geeks that are in vogue with modern day web apps and their requirements. Thanks Ljudmila!

What do you know! My blog is up and running once again after a long hiatus. What happened you might ask? Well, these nasty South American hackers broke into the server that was hosting my old blog and god knows how many other websites and web projects. After they took control of the server, the only way to get it back was to reformat and use existing backups. But the real problem was that the server hadn’t been backed up for quite a while, so I lost about 9 or 10 months of updates plus a all the data from a project I did with Martin. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off at the time, but it’s all in the past now. At least nobody can see how lazy I was with my blogging.

Anyway, there’s been plenty to write about in the past couple of years and I’ll maybe try to do some flashback posts in the future, but let me just say it’s been a bumpy ride. I’ve loved and lost, went broke and the picked myself up again, spent all my mojo then found it somewhere else.

But for now, I’ll just write about the present because it’s basically nicer and more optimistic.

Oh, and the portfolio section needs a bit of updating as well.

Stay tuned!

Izidor 2005My blog won first prize in the “personal websites” category of the first slovenian web awards. Check out their page.

Lately, updates have been slow because I moved into a new apartment that doesn’t yet have an internet connection. So I’ve been running around Ljubljana from door to door with my USB key, trying to get some work done. Being offline is such a bitch, I feel like my brain shrunk to 25%.

The categories in this section list all my projects since 1998 when I started working at Parsek. The process of writing about them was very cathartic, bringing out long forgotten memories. I tried to be as accurate as possible, but the accompanying texts are still very subjective.

I split the projects up into the following categories:

  • Parsek - projects done at Parsek between 1998 and 2003
  • Renderspace - projects done at Renderspace in 2003 and 2004
  • Freelance - projects done independently
  • Artsy Fartsy - personal projects and collaborations with other artists

The project dates are more or less accurate, except the ones from 1998, which are only dated in a way that keeps them in order.

I invite you to post any comments, suggestions and corrections using the comment forms. For comments about specific projects, post using the form at the project’s page. For general comments about my work, post them here or email me at philtre(at)gmail(dot)com.

evilectro 2005The second volume in the series of New Year’s mixes is even more danceable, sometimes venturing into the evil side of my daily playlist, although allowing breathing room with some funkier and a few mellower tracks.

Description

East Art Map OnlineEast Art Map Online is a joint effort between the artist group Irwin and Renderspace - Pristop Interactive, the production company I was working for at the time, to bring the East Art Map to the internet as an interactive collaborative database. It allows visitors to post comments, suggest replacements for individual works and read news and articles by participating curators.

The project “East Art Map - A (Re)Construction of the History of Contemporary Art in Eastern Europe” was initiated in 2001 by the Slovenian artist group Irwin. The “East Art Map” (EAM) aims at critically (re)constructing the history of art in Eastern Europe between 1945 and the present beyond ex-Socialist ‘official’ chronicles, national legend formation and fragmented information present in the West.

Martin Krpan splash screenI did this game with the Hikikomori studio for the Slovenian Government as part of an educational portal for children. The main character, Martin Krpan, was taken from a famous Slovenian tale by Fran Levstik about a salt smuggler that is invited to Vienna by the emperor to fight against a generally unpleasant giant Brdavs.
In this modern adaptation, our hero travels through the beaurocratic maze of the Slovenian government, each level representing a different ministry where Krpan has to collect trucker’s permits, while answering trivia about the government and avoiding obstacles. I provided the game logic, engine and worked with Jure from Comland to tie it to the backend, while all levels and characters were designed and animated by Aljoša and Aron from Hikikomori.

I wonder if this game will ever see the light of day, especially since the last elections.
